What this site is

Saunskruti publishes Sanskrit texts with transliteration, translation and a word-by-word gloss. It is a work of scholarship and it is offered for reading and study. Using it does not create an account, a subscription or an obligation on your side, and there is nothing to pay.

The Sanskrit

The texts themselves are ancient and nobody owns them. Where a reading is contested we say so, and every text carries a Source section naming the witnesses it was collated against. If you think a reading is wrong, please write to us; a correction is more useful to us than a compliment.

Our translations and glosses

The English translations, the transliterations, the word-by-word glosses and the commentary are our own work, prepared from the Sanskrit. They are not adapted from any other edition. That work is copyright Saunskruti.

You may quote from it freely for study, teaching, review, recitation and scholarship, including in a class, a talk, a paper or a post, provided you say where it came from. Reproducing a text in full, or building another work or product on this material, needs our permission first, and asking is usually all it takes. A transmission that cannot be passed on is not a transmission, and we would rather say yes.

Recitations

Recitations are the work of the reciters credited beside them and are played from YouTube under YouTube’s terms. They are not ours to license, and this page grants you no rights in them.

What we do not promise

We take accuracy seriously and we will still be wrong sometimes. The site is provided as it is, without any warranty, and we are not liable for what follows from relying on it. Nothing here is religious, medical, legal or financial advice.

We describe what a text says. Where a verse promises an outcome, we translate that faithfully as the text’s claim; it is never ours, and we make no claim about what reciting or reading anything will do for you.

Using the site

Read it, link to it, print it, quote it. Do not scrape it wholesale, do not attempt to disrupt it or the people using it, and do not present our translations as your own or as somebody else’s.

Changes

These terms may change; the date at the top will change with them. Substantive changes will be described here rather than absorbed silently.

We have not published a contact address yet, and we would rather say so than print one that does not work. It will appear here, for permissions and corrections both, before the site is announced. See also our privacy notice.
