Privacy

The short version

We do not have an account system, we do not run analytics, and we set no cookies of our own. Reading this site leaves nothing about you with us. The one exception is the recitation player, and it only happens if you press play. That is described below in full.

What we do not do

• No accounts, no sign-in, no email list.
• No analytics of any kind. No page-view counter, no session recording, no heatmaps.
• No advertising, no ad networks, no tracking pixels, no fingerprinting.
• No cookies set by us, for any purpose, including “essential” ones.
• Nothing is sold, shared or transferred, because there is nothing to sell.

What stays in your browser

Choosing the light or dark reading ground writes one value to your browser’s local storage, under the key theme, so the page does not flash the wrong ground on your next visit. It never leaves your device and we cannot read it. Clearing your site data removes it.

Recitations

Recitations are hosted on YouTube and played through YouTube’s own embedded player. Nothing from YouTube or Google is requested while you are only reading: the player and its script are fetched the moment you press play, and not before.

When you do press play, your browser connects to Google’s servers, and Google receives your IP address, your browser and device details, and the page you came from. Google’s handling of that is governed by their policy, not ours. The player is served from youtube-nocookie.com, Google’s privacy-enhanced host, which does not set the tracking cookies a standard embed would; the small script that drives it still comes from youtube.com. None of that makes the connection private, and we do not want to imply otherwise. If you would rather Google received nothing, do not press play. Every text is complete without it.

We receive nothing back. We do not know whether you played anything, and we have no access to YouTube’s figures for these videos.

Fonts

Newsreader and Tiro Devanagari Sanskrit are downloaded at build time and served from this site. Your browser never contacts Google Fonts, so no request for a typeface reveals what you are reading.

Server logs

Our host keeps ordinary web server logs, which include IP addresses and requested URLs, for the security and operation of the site. We do not join those logs to anything else and we do not use them to build a picture of a reader.

Children

The site collects nothing from anybody, of any age, so there is nothing here that needs a separate rule for children.

Changes

If this ever changes, the date at the top changes with it. We will not quietly begin collecting something and describe it in a paragraph nobody rereads.
